Washington does not require families to use a funeral director. The person with the legal right to control the disposition can file the death record and get the burial-transit permit from the local registrar. Washington was the first state to allow natural organic reduction (human composting), and alkaline hydrolysis is also legal. Certified death certificates start at $25 a copy. Our Washington funeral and cremation guide explains each step.
