New England blends moderate-to-high cremation adoption with some of the country’s higher price tags. Genuine all-inclusive direct cremation runs from about $1,195 in Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire up to $2,000 in Connecticut — the region’s priciest — while independent providers in the larger metros undercut local funeral homes.

A high-regulation belt with the widest price spread in the country. New York and New Jersey require a licensed funeral director for every cremation, and New York bars funeral-home-owned crematories — yet fierce metro competition means a New York City direct-cremation service fee starts at just $495 (crematory fee additional). A genuine all-inclusive cremation runs from around $695 in Pennsylvania, rising past $1,795 in rural West Virginia.

Historically the lowest cremation adoption in the U.S. (the “Bible Belt” effect) but climbing fast — and among the most affordable regions. Florida (from $765) and Arkansas and Georgia (from $795) anchor the low end, with much of the Southeast bookable under $1,000. Louisiana and Maryland-adjacent states run a little higher.

Rural distances and fewer competing providers push Midwestern averages high — North Dakota ($3,183), Iowa ($2,992) and Nebraska ($2,969) are among the priciest states in the country. But the gap to the lowest available price is wide, so shopping around pays off, with DFS direct cremations from as little as $825 in Ohio.

One of the most affordable and competitive regions. Texas (from $795) and Arizona (from $850) anchor the value end, with Oklahoma from $1,050 and New Mexico from $1,290. High metro competition keeps prices keen across the Sun Belt.

The West has the lowest average cremation costs in the nation — Oregon ($1,264), Nevada ($1,428) and California ($1,582) among the cheapest — though prices climb sharply in the sparsely populated Mountain states, where Wyoming and Montana top $2,400 on average. Where a DFS provider operates, direct cremation typically starts around $850.
