A direct cremation in Maine costs about $2,347 on average, but all-inclusive packages start from $1,195 in southern and central Maine, including Portland, Lewiston and Augusta. Prices vary from one provider to the next, so ask two or three funeral homes for their General Price List before you decide. Under the FTC Funeral Rule, they must give you one when you ask. See Cremation Costs in Maine for prices by city.

Maine allows families to handle a death themselves and to obtain and file the permits. There is a 48-hour wait after death before a cremation can take place, and a medical examiner must issue a cremation certificate first. Natural organic reduction (human composting) is also legal in Maine. A death certificate costs $15 for the first copy and $6 for each extra copy. Our Maine funeral and cremation guide explains each step.
